Giving Back to a Great Community

From the beginning of this project all the way to the end, I hoped that the result would be to make the softball and baseball fields a place that people wanted to come to because of the clean and fresh feeling that I would help to create.  I also hoped that I would inspire the players to take care of the area and keep it looking good.  I thought that maybe if they felt proud to be there, then they would be inspired to clean up after themselves or maybe even bring people to take a look at the mural.  When I think about who benefitted from my project, I believe that the entire Metuchen Little League community benefitted from the results.

A NATIONAL LINK:  I do think that there is a national link because kids all across the USA play softball and baseball and probably have the same issues and we do.  Without adult volunteers we wouldn't have Little League and sometimes their priorities are different than the kids.  I think that most players would like to have a clean and fresh dugout.  I think that they'd also be excited to plan and paint a mural on a snack bar or even a wall.  I believe that we can all give some of our time to take care of the things that we use most often.  I learned from watching my parents that volunteering is a great way to give back and it is definitely something that people all across the USA do all the time.  Maybe if they see how much players and parents appreciate the work that we've been able to accomplish, they might be inspired to do something like us.  I also think that it is very important to treat the softball and baseball fields the same.  Sometimes I think that a more attention is paid to the baseball field and I tried to show that by taking care of both, we can all equally enjoy the benefits.

WHAT I'VE LEARNED:  I have learned lots of valuable leadership skills from working on my Silver Award. One skill I learned was time management. To keep up with my school work, Little League Beautification Project and have time for softball practices and tournaments, I had to use my time wisely to make sure that I completed everything I had to do to the best of my ability.

FUTURE IMPACT:  I think that completing my Girl Scout Silver Award project has helped my leadership skills grow tremendously. I became better at speaking in front of groups due to all the updates and presentations I gave to the Metuchen Little League Board members. I also had to take the initiative to figure out when I needed to work on the project and complete tasks which carried into the skill of time management that this project helped me learn. I learned the different stages that are part of painting a mural which will help me in future art projects. I also learned to be adaptable since there were obstacles, such as the weather which caused delays. I believe that because I have completed my Silver Award I have become a better leader and the leadership skills I learned will transfer into everything that I do.

Do a good turn daily.

The Girl Scout slogan, which has been used since 1912, is a reminder of the many ways girls can contribute positively to the lives of others.
